Sponsor a student

For exceptional students who need extra help — the supplies their school year asks for, and the support at home that lets them keep going.

Backpacks, notebooks and pencils prepared for students

The challenge

Doing well is not always enough to keep going

A student can be doing everything right — top of the class, teachers who believe in them — and still not finish. Where a household is stretched thin, school ends up competing with more immediate things, and the immediate things tend to win.

It starts small. A supply list is one more bill arriving at the worst possible time, and turning up without a notebook or the uniform everyone else is wearing is not a small thing when you are nine. Then it is not small at all: rent is now, and a diploma is later.

That is not a failure of the family. So rather than ask a family to choose differently, we make the choice less sharp. Cover what the student needs for the year and what the household is short of each month, and a student who is already doing the work gets to carry on doing it.

The kit arrives before the first day of school; the household package arrives every month after that. Food is shelf-stable and chosen so families can cook culturally familiar meals.

What it covers

The student and the household behind them

School supplies
A backpack, notebooks, pencils and pens, and the classroom materials on the school's own list — built around one student for a full school year, so the first day is about the classroom rather than what's missing from the desk.
Uniform
The part families most often can't stretch to, and the part other children see. It goes in with the supplies.
Monthly support
Staple foods, protein, cooking essentials, and hygiene items, delivered every month to the household, so a family can plan around it rather than hope for it.
Clothing & essential items
Clothing, shoes, and household items when a sponsored student or their family needs them now.

How it works

The supplies go to the student; the monthly support goes to the household. That is deliberate: the pressure that interrupts a child’s schooling sits on the household budget, so the household budget is where it has to be lifted. A prize handed to a child leaves the actual problem exactly where it was.

Families show the school’s own record — a report card each term. The students in this program are at the top of their class, and staying there is how the sponsorship continues. We ask for nothing the school does not already issue, because a program that costs a family a day of lost pay to apply for is not support.

We work through schools and trusted local partners, who know the student and the household both. They can tell us which student is at risk of not finishing — which is the moment this has to arrive — and hand it over without singling anyone out.

Who it's for

  • Exceptional students, at or near the top of their class
  • Students whose household is facing food or economic insecurity
  • Families committed to keeping their child in school
  • Schools and local partners who know the student and the home

Need comes first — every household here is one facing real insecurity. The school record decides where a limited budget lands. It is not a verdict on any child who is not in the program.

How you can help

Sponsor a student

Donations to Sponsor pay for the supply kits, the uniforms, and the monthly packages. A monthly gift is the most useful kind: it lets us commit to a student for the whole school year.

Every gift is tax-deductible, and you can change or cancel a monthly gift at any time.
